Hala Fruit or Tahitian screw pine
The Hala fruit, like the paste made from the leaves, has a delicate, sweet flavor. It can be consumed raw, cooked, ground into a paste, or squeezed into juice.
The fruit, which is found in Southeast Asia, eastern Australia, the Pacific Islands, and Hawaii, is a large edible fruit made up of numerous segment cones.
The fruit’s edible pulp is contained in the cones. However, you may need to use some large utensil to remove a few of the cones in order to get to the pulp. The keys’ outer edges are green and very fibrous.
It appears to be a little frightening. But don’t be put off by the appearances; chances are you’ve already tried a variation at some point in your life.
The fruit has a mildly sweet, tropical flavor that tastes like a cross between mango and pineapple, with a hint of banana.
